Ringing in an Organized New Year
It's our favorite duo! If you followed along when we hosted our 'House Party' this time last year, you may remember these two. Katie & Kari (of the Home Sanctuary) were born to help the rest of us be more organized. As a local business, their attention to detail is key in helping clients sustain their newly organized spaces. Read our interview with them and maybe some of their magic will rub off on you!
It's that time of year where people are making resolution. What is your number one piece of advise for those working towards becoming more organized in 202o?
THS: If you have not used (or worn) an item in the last year, the chances are VERY slim that you will use/wear the item again. Seriously consider donating. We also recommend that you take 10-15 minutes at the end of every day to do a quick "reset" of the main living space (eg. fold laundry, sort mail, empty backpacks, do a quick pick-up). This allows you to start every day off fresh and keeps clutter from accumulating day-to-day.
What is the biggest mistake people should avoid when organizing?
Buying the wrong size containers and losing tons of space! Completely empty spaces FIRST to assess what you own and what organizing products are needed, and then measure before shopping!
What are the benefits of hiring a professional organizer?
We are not attached to your items and can help you make the tough decisions on what to keep, toss or donate. Also, organizing is such physical work! We do the hard work and you get to come home to your beautiful home sanctuary.
In general, what is the importance of having an organized household? What rewards should people expect and look forward to?
We feel your home should be a peaceful place of refuge, and the one that makes you happy and relaxed - not overwhelmed and overstimulated by clutter. We give every item a home. We do not try to make your home look "Pinterest perfect" but rather, our goal is to create systems that are stylish AND functional. This will help relieve stress for all family members when trying to get out the door. Life will still get messy, but with functional systems in place, those nightly "resets" will be much easier to manage!
What are your favorite organizational tools to use in a space?
Kitchen: lazy susans - all day, every day
Mail: cute tray or basket (but you have to go through it regularly!) Closets: any kind of bin to contain like items
Drawers: drawer dividers
Kid's spaces: art caddy

Lastly, any exciting things on the horizon for the THS girls, that we should look out for?
We have an online organizing "how-to" bundle coming out in January. We are
teaming up with other professional organizers to offer those who prefer to DIY, all of our tips & tricks! The bundle will cover everything from closet organization to time management to kids and toys to meal planning. We are so excited to participate and to share our knowledge! Make sure to follow us @thehomesanctuary on Instagram to be the first to know all things THS!
